The Medium is not the Message is the first issue of a hypothetical newspaper called The Now, which examines the changing and expanding role of social media in society.  The Medium is not the Message is an examination of hashtag activism. The message of it lies in the relationship between individual users and the communities the platform can create. Hashtag activism is transient, but it can create a collective that leads to tangible change in the world beyond the screen.

The newspaper as the medium for this project reflects the fleeting nature of social media.

Through the use of a clean and utilitarian typeface, large typography, and the bisection of body copy with statistics, the design presents radical ideas in a way that is digestible for the audience.

The hypothetical launch for the newspaper takes the form of a newsstand and billboard in Times Square. It serves as a physical space for the community. People can start conversations by uploading their thoughts to the billboard and others can react to the those thoughts.

At the end of the day, the trending hashtags of the day are printed and added as an insert to the newspaper.
